When the Weather Can’t Decide

It’s not quite like that easy drift from summer into autumn, when we’re still carrying warmth from long golden days and sun-filled evenings. The shift from winter into spring feels altogether different. There’s still a chill lingering in the air, coats remain within arm’s reach, and we’re all slowly emerging from seasonal hibernation — hopeful, but not quite brave enough to trust the sunshine just yet.

We always find the transition seasons the trickiest to navigate. Those in-between weeks where the calendar confidently declares spring, while the weather quietly disagrees. One minute we’re wrapped in scarves, clutching a hot coffee like essential survival equipment. The next, we’re squinting into unexpected sunshine, styling sunglasses and a trench coat as if we’d planned it that way all along.

There’s something deeply humbling about transitional dressing. You leave the house feeling quietly pleased with yourself — layered to perfection — only to find yourself peeling off knitwear by mid-morning, juggling coat, bag, and dignity in equal measure. Or worse, you get ahead of yourself. One bright morning convinces you it’s bare ankle season, and suddenly you’re spending the day regretting every optimistic decision while a sharp breeze reminds you who’s actually in charge

It’s fashion roulette, really. Boots or loafers? Proper coat or light jacket optimism? And don’t even get us started on thermals. The annual debate over whether it’s finally time to retire them is nothing short of emotional.

Which is why transitional style feels less about trends and far more about strategy. Clever layering becomes second nature. A trench casually thrown over a knit. Sunglasses permanently stationed in your bag. Shoes that can survive both a hopeful coffee in the sun and an entirely predictable downpour twenty minutes later.

And yet, despite the wardrobe indecision, there’s something rather lovely about this in-between season. The light lingers longer, plans stretch gently into the evening, and there’s a quiet promise of warmer days ahead. Even if we spend half the season slightly overdressed or mildly freezing, at least we know we’re all figuring it out together.

Here’s to mastering the art of maybe-weather — and to always keeping a spare pair of socks in your bag, just in case.
